The Types of Courage Leaders Need

Courage is doing it scared. Courage comes when we decide to act because something or someone is more important to us than our fear. Courage isn't a character trait: it's more like a muscle we can exercise and grow.

Anyone can become courageous, but leaders must be able to be courageous if they want to live and lead by God's Design.

There are different kinds of courage we can grow and practice.

Creative Courage to paint a vision of what needs to be different while inspiring others to take action alongside you and to lead the way with new ideas and ways of acting with integrity to achieve sustainable change.

Moral Courage to right wrongs, to take the risk to speak truth to power, to demand change, and to face the consequences.

Physical Courage to risk our own pain, injury, or even death for the sake of another-- or even

for our own survival or growth.

Social Courage to risk being vulnerable for the sake of relating to others with authentic presence by overcoming shame and risking loss, grief, embarrassment, sorrow, or disappointment for the possibility of love, joy, happiness, connection, and flourishing.

When we always play it safe, we will always take a back seat. We won't discover the life that God has Designed for us, and we won't lead others into the same. When we aren't courageous we get stuck and our resolve to seek God's will weakens.

Who do you know that has shown these types of courage?

Are you feeling stuck? What kind of courage muscles do you need to grow?

What's more important to you than your fear? Or, what do you need to pray about so that you can overcome your fear and courageously get into action about?
