learn to surface, test and reform mental models in your life and leadership.
Start your journey with the CLC Primer.
The Primer focuses on laying the foundation for CLC's mental model of change. We introduce you to the basic idea of mental models, our theology and scriptural foundations, and the way we understand and practice key adaptive leadership skills, including how we go about change and learning. The values of love, authenticity, curiosity, courage, and integrity will become foundational to your life and ministry.
You'll be challenged, encouraged, and supported as you try different things, learn hard things, and seek how God is doing a new thing in your ministry context.
The apostle Paul described this work in Romans 12: "I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, to present yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect."
In the CLC Primer you and a team will learn:
What Mental Models are and how they function.
In this unit you'll be introduced to mental models, aspects of systems thinking, and learn about how mental models impact your community. You will be able to grow your emotional and spiritual maturity by unearthing some of your own mental models and examining the roadblocks to change. You'll also begin to learn the process of unearthing and testing mental models.
The theology and biblical foundation of mental models.
In this unit you'll explore the Old and New Testaments through a mental models lens. Then, you'll reflect on how mental models reveal theology. You'll deep dive into the biblical mental models that form the foundation of CLC's ideology, and will consider the invitation of Romans 12.1-2, both personally and for your congregation. You will continue to grow your skills for personally unearthing and testing mental models, and take a step towards reforming some of them.
CLC's key mental models for personal and congregational transformation.
In this last unit of the Primer, you will be thoroughly introduced to the mental models that undergird our ideology and process. These include the mental models of:
Mastery and Personal Responsibility
Adaptive Leadership and Skill Sets
How It Works
The process is flexible so that groups of churches and leaders can learn together, or on their own at their own pace, usually over 12 to 18 months.
Pastors go through the material on their own, then form and lead a team of key leaders through the same material. After your team has completed the Primer, you'll have the option to join the larger CLC community of learners and practitioners to continue to grow your adaptive leadership skills and support your community as you experiment.
Cost for involvement is based on a number of factors, but usually works out to be $1500 per year.
Here are some key components of our process:
All Material is Online
You'll be able to access the videos and handouts whenever and wherever you want (as long as you have internet).
Handouts are all downloadable so you can print them to use offline. You'll have access to the videos for as long as you are enrolled in the Primer.
Along the way, you'll be connected to the CLC community of learners and be supported as you put together a team of learners in your congregation.
Together, you'll surface, test, and discern with God what mental models need to be transformed in order for your community to pursue faithful and fruitful missional living.
As part of the Primer, CLC Coaches meet regularly with the pastor and team as you learn and experiment. We believe that having support outside of your "system" is key. Coaching creates purposeful space for people to reflect, ask questions, and be held accountable.
